Gorgé de soleil, viscéral, un solo du new-yorkais d’origine portoricaine Brandon Lopez a quelque chose du combat de boxe. D’un corps à corps avec sa contrebasse, qui frappe, percute, caresse, transpire. Pleinement engagé dans une musique entière, sans artifice, Brandon Lopez est l’un des improvisateurs essentiels du New York actuel, multipliant les collaborations avec le poète Fred Moten, la violoniste gabby fluke-mogul, la saxophoniste Ingrid Laubrock ou le batteur Tom Rainey. Dans sa contrebasse, le son du Barrio et celui de Cecil Taylor se mélange pour offrir des performances ahurissantes d’engagement physique et rythmique.
Sun-drenched and visceral, a solo by the New York-based Puerto Rican musician Brandon Lopez has something of a boxing match about it. It is a hand-to-hand struggle with his double bass, which strikes, crashes, caresses and sweats. Fully immersed in music that is whole and unpretentious, Brandon Lopez is one of the key improvisers on the current New York scene, collaborating frequently with the poet Fred Moten, the violinist Gabby Fluke-Mogul, the saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock and the drummer Tom Rainey. In his double bass, the sound of the Barrio blends with that of Cecil Taylor to deliver stunning performances of physical and rhythmic intensity.
